How to Easily Soften Honey
Discover a simple kitchen hack that effortlessly softens honey at home using warm water. Watch as the crystallized honey transforms into a smooth and pourable consistency, making it easier to use in your favorite recipes and preventing an immediate trip to the grocery store.
Don’t you worry!
Crystallized honey does not mean that your honey can’t be used anymore. In general, honey does not have an expiry date. Because honey crystallizes over time, here is the best way to restore it without damaging or altering it:
Instructions
Heat up water until it reaches 105° F.
Place your bottle of honey into the pot (you can flip the lid upside down and use its handle to push the bottle down in order to keep it submerged) and let it sit for 15 minutes.
Remove the lid, uncover the bottle and let it stand on warm water for 15-20 minutes (try to keep the water around 105° F / 40.5° C while the honey bottle sits in it).
Repeat the process as many times as necessary, letting it stand for 15-20 minutes at a time.
Notes
Don’t place your honey in boiling water since it can reach up to 200° F / 93° C.
Don’t go above 140° F / 60° C or else it will denature the enzymes that make honey good for you.
Don’t add water inside your honey bottle to attempt to further soften the honey.
Keep the water around 105° F / 40.5° C while the bottle stands in it for 15-20 minutes, occasionally turning the heat on and off to maintain temperature.
Honey stored at colder temperatures will crystallize faster than honey stored above 70° F / 21° C.
What causes honey to crystallize?
Crystallizing happens when glucose in the honey is separating from the liquid of the honey. This is a natural process and it doesn’t mean that honey is longer good to use, so nothing to worry about.
Is microwaving a good idea?
Microwaving your honey to decrystallize is not always a good idea since it’s inconsistent. It is also risky because the plastic bottle can melt.
