How to Not Cry When Cutting Onions
Tired of your tears falling down on your chopping board? Here are a few methods that will help you skip the crying while cutting onions:
Chill the Onion
This is an optional step. If you have extra time to spare, then chilling the onion will significantly reduce the chances of chemicals being released while cutting.
You can use one of these methods to chill your onion:
Let it chill inside the fridge for 30 minutes
Place it in the freezer for 3-5 minutes
Place it in a bowl of ice water for 30 minutes
Chilling an onion reduces the amount of chemicals being released onto your eyes, which lessens irritation.
Damp Paper Towel
While slicing, onions release a chemical that look for a water source. In most cases, the closest water source is your eyes!
Placing a damp paper towel next to your onion will redirect the chemicals to travel there instead of traveling to your eyes.
Use a Sharp Knife
Not only does it help with slicing the onion easier, but it will also significantly minimize the damage towards the onion cells, which means less chemicals will be released onto your eyes.
The more damage you apply, the more you will cry!
No More Tears!
Hopefully these tips will stop the tears from falling in the kitchen! Which one of these methods will you try the next time you cut onions?
